Headed to versailles. It was a pain to get here! My extensive research (including rick steves video on how to get to versailles from paris) all said that you go to any rer c stop in paris (there are 5 or so). We did. We bought tickets to versailles then went to the platform that said verailles. I ask a guy that works there. And no. This is not the train to the verailles that we want. We must take a bus. This was all in french. And I basically understood that I needed an "autobus" and not the train we were standing next to. So we left the area. And found footsteps that were painted on the floor with "bus" written on them. So we followed the footprints. We got on a bus (which is so not an efficient method of travel!..we cld of gotten to our destination in half the time on the metro. And they dropped us at a metro stop! Oh well. But from this metro/rer c station we easily found the correct train. And now we are on it. On our way to versailles. Yay!

Ok. So todays summary:

We slept in. Then headed to montmartre. We ate at a diner. Then went to the moulin rouge giftshop
Then to the montmartre cemetery
Then pics of the moulin rouge

Then over to the orangery. We saw monet's waterlilies. And a special exhibition of some Spanish artist that was really cool.

After we headed over to the Asian art museum. Lara wasn't thrilled to be there. But I like Hindu art. So we went. But not for long.

Then we went south to a street that had a Ben and jerrys. But sadly they didn't have any of the new flavors. But the website said that there were 2 other places that carried Ben and jerrys. So we found both of them. The 1st did not exist. The 2nd was a kiosk type thing that sold ice cream by the scoop. Epic fail. Oh well
In the middle of the Ben and jerrys search-we were near the cluny museum. So I decided to go there again. That was a fun side trip :)
Then we headed home. Ate dinner near home. Then as we crossed the street some backpackers asked me for directions. And I knew the answer! I even knew which metro stops and transfers. (mainly because they were going to montmartre. And we went there this morning. But still cool!)
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
We had a lovely lunch in montmartre. At a diner

Then visited the moulin rouge gift shop (which was more of a boutique). Then we went to the montmartre cemetery. Which was smaller than we expected. But really pretty. We saw tte graves of dumas (wrote 3 musketeers), Degas (painter) and zola (writer). Then we took pics of the moulin rouge.

Now we are on our way to the impressionist museum (d`orangerie)

Back in the hotel. The fireworks were amazing. Well, not just the fireworks themselves. The incredible thing was that they weren't just around the Eiffel tower. But they were also shot from the Eiffel tower. And they had it set up so lights and "flames" went up and down the tower. It was incredible. We have video of it on the camera that we'll be able to upload after we get back. But wow! Then after it was over. 1000s of people were walking randomly through the streets. And cars were just stopped. So crazy. Lara and I knew where we were (well we had an idea of where we were. We kept the river in sight. And just walked w the crowd til we got to a big landmark and where the street we needed started ). It took over an hour to walk home. And we walked practically in a straight line to the hotel). We even gave some directions.

Ok. Bed time. I'm exhausted. And my feet and legs hurt!

Happy bastille day everyone! Today has been such an eventful exciting day! Not only did I find a new European Ben and jerrys flavor, were sitting on a bridge over the seine with a perfect view of the Eiffel tower. Just ate an amazing dinner that was accompanied by a huge hoegarden... With lemon! First hoegarden in awhile! Jill and I see having an amazing time! Waiting for the fireworks with thousands of other Parisians and travelers coming for paris' 4th of july, like us... I even smell barbeque its perfect! Dad, I wish you were here with us, sitting on our aplemachen towel and enjoying the view and company... Can't wait to show you the pictures! I'm sure well Blog after the show! Have fun at the all star game later! even though I'm jealous, there's no way I could complain. What a night!

Switching trains is turning out to be really easy. We leave from the same platform. We are in koeln. We have to wait 30 min. Then board our next train. For like 3 days my internet hasn't really worked. I'm hoping that its a German thing and not. Snazzy new blackberry thing.

Oh. And from carrying my bags today on my arm. Specifically my right arm. I now have what looks like track marks on my right arm. Right where they wld be if they were real. No bueno. Oh well :)

In my cage, back at the hotel... Jill let me have the taller one, what a good big sis. The Sony center was a lot smaller than we thought. Still very cool architecture, dad I think you would have appreciated. We had dinner at an Australian restaurant, we tried ppl but we realized that neither one of us like sausage or schnitzle, and we aren't big meat ppl. But don't worry were getting all the beer we can afford! I tried a new one today! At least one new one everyday so far! We had one at a beer garden that was HORRIBLE. There weren't many choices so we chose one that wasn't becks (lots of different becks). We figured out it was a mix of beer with some type of soda, the choices were red or green and we blindly chose green. Bad choice we should have gone with the becks. There was an interesting ginger lime one that would have satisfied my trying new things. Lesson learned. Earlier we went to the checkpoint Charlie museum and hitlers bunker. We learned from a tour group that we passed, that hitlers remains were dug up and chopped up and flushed down the toilet. I thought that was interesting. Ps hitlers bunker consisted of a parking lot and a sign. Passing Tour also pointed out this was because they made a point not to have any Hitler museum, memorial, or anything that would be dedicated towards him because how f-ed up he was. The only thing he has is a sign and an empty unkept parking lot. That's what you get you bastard. We also passed the holocaust memorial. Huge huge maze type thing. It was basically varying sizes/heights of cement-looking blocks. Something for me to research later. The internet/email didn't work all day- crappy. I was much more relaxed about it than Jill was but she's in charge of all that pretty much so I understand her frustration. We also mastered the berlin u-bahn. Much easier than previously expected.
I can't praise our room more. Haven't ever stayed in a room that could even come close to comparing! Were tired now, both in our cages... He he he. Tomorrow we go to the zoo/aquarium!! Were very excited but also sad because tomorrow is our last day in berlin. But also excited because we get to return to Paris! Bastille day!! Yahoo! Ok goodnight for now. Miss you all :)
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
So far today has been lovely. After checking in we conquered the u-bahn (super easy). And went to the checkpoint Charlie museum. Kind of interesting. Then on the way to the site of hitlers bunker we got to see some of the wall (some of the remaining pieces). Then we went to a beer garden and had the grossest beer ever. Now we are hanging on the unter den linden for a bit before heading to the Sony center for dinner. Then back to the coolest hotel ever!

Two lions room

Currently I'm in a cage! This room is ridiculous!! Two bed-cages hanging in the middle of the room, a little nook in the corner I already explored, another nook on the other side of the room, a TV!, a wall of windows with big pretty curtains next to a raised area with two beetlejuice-esk lounge chairs, there's a peeping window that goes to the room next to ours and if we have those curtains open and so do they, depending on whose lights are off can peek into the other room!! The only lights are orangey on the walls. Then the bathroom: closed off by two curtains that open up to a huge bathtub with a ginormous mirror covering most of the back wall. There's a little rail that's really pretty and artsy with two little candles you could light. The shower is to the right and two steps lead up to a green/blue glass room with stone walls. To the left, 6 stairs lead up to a clear glass room so you can look out while you do your business, but towards the room the glass is bluish around where the toilet is, enabling one to view the whole bathroom while their privates are hidden on their throne. There are little closets everywhere in the bathroom, and we even get a balcony- not really that small of one either. All and all this suite is way better than the hostel suite. Wahoo!

10 July 2009

Ok. So today was a lot of fun we started w the altes museum (lots of ancient Greek statues and vases, and Egyptian stuff, including the nefertiti bust). We enjoyed that. Then we went over to the pergamon museum. They had giant ancient stuff. Like full buildings. Then across the street to an Italian place. Funny to say grazie in Germany. It was raining really hard. So we stayed there for a long time. When it stopped raining we headed up unter den linden (a huge boulevard) towards the brandenburg gate. We enjoyed our stroll. At the gate we took lots of pics (remember when Reagan stood w it in the background and said "mr gorbechev tear down this wall!"). The hotel adlon was right there too! (where Michael Jackson held his baby over the balcony w a towel over the babys head).
Then it started raining. Like really hard. The wind was blowing hard. We hung under the gate for awhile. When it slowed down we walked over to the Reichstag (the parliament building). We're gonna go back tomorrow to go in.

Then we walked back down unter den linden (we stopped at a cafe to have a beer-and to use their bathrooms). On the way back we shopped a little..buying some touristy stuff. When we got back to the museum area (which is an island) we took lots of pics. The Berliner dome was so gorgeous. Its this old cathedral. It was gutted a while back. But the outside is amazing. Then we came back to the hostel to drop our stuff off.
Then we walked back to the nearby square to have dinner. Kilkinneys Irish pub was perfect. Pubs always seem to have great food! And they had a cricket game on. So tourists were coming in to watch the game.
We just got back to the room. And wow we are tired. Tomorrow we check out and go to the crazy hotel on the other side of berlin.

They were putting down a slab of raw salmon for everyone but for me he didn't even ask and put down some type of dish with chicken. Lunch was a big fail: fish tasting rice, some type of pastry with green gook, wet tiny pieces of chicken, one strip of overcooked soggy zuchini, cheese that smelled like old smelly rotting cheese, and chocolate with lavender. With the choice of plain bread or bread with little dark pieces (which I was thinking was chocolate) turned out to be olives. It was fun none the less. We took a picture. First class is awesome! He said it was good for his "spirit" to find people he cld talk to because the bones affected his mind. He had a flashlight. So it was cool. We didn't step in one puddle thanks to him. The catacombs seem to employ foreigners. The guy at the exit was Arab and seemed thrilled to use English and not french as we left.

In the past it has been annoying to tell people where we are from. No one knows where stl is. So we are using LA as our "home". So much easier. everyone knows where that is.

Today was a really long day. We posted a few times through out the day. After we went to the arch de triomphe we walked down the champs. So many people! We found a pharmacy...which was awesome. Now we can shave, store our contacts and straighten our hair. We saw the obelisk in the place de la concorde which was very cool. Its HUGE! Back in the 1700s, Egypt gave France two obelisks. This is one of them. Its stands where the guillotine once stood. (and the other obelisk is still in Egypt. It never actually made the trip to France. It was too big at the time. And then a few years ago France officially gave it back). Then when we finally made it home to the marais neighborhood where we had an amazing dinner and some wine. Our pasta had an egg on top. Very strange. It was yellow and runny. But the pasta was good. We were both so tired and sweaty then we came back to the hotel. Even tho its still light out. We were just so tired. Its crazy. My feet hurt. My ankles. Calfs. Legs. Side. Back. Shoulders. Everything!
We're gonna sleep well tonight!

Tomorrow the goal is to go to the Eiffel tower, the musee d'orsay, the musee rodin, delacroix museum. And the cluny museum. I don't know if we'll get all of that done. But its the goal. Hopefully it'll be cooler tomorrow. Today was unusually hot. 10 degrees hotter than average!

Got a late start this morning. Sleep was needed tho! Then we headed to the louvre. We so knew where we were going but decided to follow the big signs intended for tourists. They totally got us lost. But we got back on track and got there. We saw everything we wanted to see. No ancient sumerian money holders anywhere tho :( now we are headed to the ile de la cite. For st chapelle and notre dame. But we got side tracked by an Irish pub. Now drinking Irish beer. An relaxing. Our feet hurt!

Paris! Yay. So glad to be here. Our hotel pa definately a not a 5 star hotel. But its definately a local hotel. So that's cool. We will need to purchase shampoo and body wash and stuff today. We're on the 4th floor. There are 5 rooms or so on each floor. And they all open out to look down over the entrance/lobby. And since we don't have a/c. I have a feeling we are going to get to know our neighbors well. But the bed doesn't suck and the shower has hot water. So no complaining here. Dinner last night was so good. Our waiter kept laughing at pa because we were trying to be polite and use the little french we knew. But neither of us had brushed up on our food vocab. So we knew what we had ordered for our appetizer. But then Lara and I split a sandwich...and we had no idea what was going to be coming. Now we know how to say turkey sandwich in french. It was a really good sandwich. The bartender was into the most random music. So we heard everything from Abba to rap to the Jackson 5.
We slept in this morning. So we're getting a bit of a late start...but not too late. Then we'll head out to the louvre. Then St chappelle. Then notre dame. And finally the pompidou. Then at night we'll go up the arc de triomphe and walk down the champs. Then bed. Good day all in all :)

Exhausted and ready to pass out. Its midnight. We got to Paris safe. Found our train into the city. And our hotel. We didn't get to the hotel until after 9. We headed down the street to a cafe. Where we had an amazing meal and wine. Its been a big day. We're both exhausted. And going to bed. More details. And hopefully a pic or two tomorrow.

Night. :)

So far its been a day filled of sleepiness and line waiting. I'm very sleepy and tired of standing in line. After landing in London we stood in line to get to terminal 5. Then we stood in line for over an hour to get our boarding pass. Then a line for customs. Then a line for security. That's a lot of lines! Good lunch tho.
Now we both need massages. And we are tired. But we'll be in Paris soon. Yay.

So our flight to Boston was delayed. So we missed our flight to Paris. Which so totally sucks! So now we are on standby for a flight to London tonight. I so so hope we get on. Otherwise we get to sleep in Boston. But thanks to Chris and sally. We got to hang in the admirals club for awhile. Which was absolutely lovely. Lara had a Cobb salad and a cosmo. And I got to use a real computer to find the contact info for our Paris hotel. And sally said that we can go back to the admirals club tomorrow if we don't get the flight tonight.

No more airport bar hopping. We've hit up chili's, tequleria, schlafly and Wolfgang puck. Stupid weather delay. But we're finally boarding. Yay!
